Varroa treatmentThe European varroa treatment of choice is now licensed for use in the UK and is exclusively available from Thornes.

Apivar comes in a pack of 10 strips. Each treatment requires the use of 2 strips meaning that each pack will treat five hives. Strips are 210x40mm wide and therefore fit neatly between the frames without having to be cut or bent (as with Apitraz strips). The active ingredient is Amitraz which paralyzes the varroa mite causing it to fall off the bees.

One single application of Apivar has efficacy of up to 99% and there are no temperature constraints as there are with most other varroa treatments. It can therefore be used at any time of year, although supers must not be on the hives. The strips should be left in for between 6 and 10 weeks, depending on the size of the brood and the time of year. We would recommed a spring treatment of between 6 and 10 weeks or an autumn treatment of 10 weeks.

Apivar can be used during feeding - in fact it is recommended
